Moringa seeds are becoming increasingly well known for the benefits to our overall health. Western communities are finally catching on! As more and more research takes place, Moringa is becoming something of a new superfood trend. What is Moringa and Moringa Seeds?

Moringa is a small tree grown in the Himalayan region. The Moringa tree comes in 13 different species, but when we speak of it we refer to the Moringa oleifera tree, which is full of nutrients. It grows rapidly in the right climate, mainly Himalayan and the tropics ( India, Pakistan , Nepal).

The Moringa oleifera tree and its benefits are not new. In fact, it has been eaten by different cultures across the world for thousands of years. In one culture (Ayurveda), it is used in traditional healing remedies and said to help hundreds of diseases.

The tree can withstand tough climates and is said to never die. It can grow in poor soil conditions and grows to very large heights. It grows quickly and strongly all year. It is sometimes called the ‘horseradish tree’ because it resembles horseradish in appearance and spicy taste.

Packed full of vitamins and minerals, Moringa is said to be a natural health treatment for blood sugar levels, energy levels, blood pressure and good for skin and hair. In traditional herbal medicine, it has been known as a ‘cure-all’ tree.

The great thing about the Moringa tree is that all parts can be used – either consumed or used in medicine (flowers, seeds, fruit, leaves and even the tree bark). There’s no waste from Moringa when it comes to using it for our health, which makes it useful to mass produce.

Moringa Seeds, Moringa Tea and Moringa Powder

In this article, we are referring to Moringa Seeds. The seeds can be extracted from pods on the tree and used early on or when they are matured (i.e. older). They can also be pressed to make Moringa oil. Moringa is also used as Moringa Tea and by making Moringa Powder.

Moringa Side Effects 

  1. Moringa Seed And Pregnancy
  2. There have been some reports that Moringa Seeds contribute to aborting an early pregnancy and it is best avoided in pregnant women until researched further. If in doubt, consult your healthcare professional for advice.

  3. Moringa Seed And Breastfeeding
  4. While there are studies done which show use of Moringa leaf can increase breast milk supply but there are no studies on effect of this increased milk supply on infants. There also have been multiple incidents of infants developing issues so it is advisable to avoid taking moringa supplements while breastfeeding

  5. Nausea & Dizziness
  6. If you take more than the recommended dose of moringa in a day you may feel dizziness and nausea.

  7. Heartburn
  8. Moringa should be taken with plenty of water and if you take it with little or no water you would feel heartburn

  9. Blood Thickening
  10. Eating Moringa leads to thickening of blood so if you are on blood thickening medication please avoid Moringa

Moringa Seeds as a modern and Western supplement is relatively new and more research is needed to understand daily recommended intake and how effective its health benefits are. Studies have been taken out on lab rats, but little has been tested on humans (especially how much to be consumed daily). For now, it is best to assume that a small amount has many health benefits (but not to overdo it).

There has not yet been enough research on humans as to possible side effects, but Moringa Seeds should not be taken instead of prescribed medicines and should be ceased if you feel any side effect symptoms (such as nausea or dizziness).

Moringa Dosage : How to Use Moringa

Based on Studies done in rats ideal dosage is 150 to 200 mg/ Kg  when taken orally.

  1. 1,600 to 2,200 mg for a 150-pound person
  2. 2,100 to 2,900 mg for a 200-pound person
  3. 2,700 to 3,600 mg for a 250-pound person

Do use these guidelines as highest possible maximum limit and start with the lowest number and see how your body reacts to it. There is not a lot of studies done on humans so far.

Full of vitamins and minerals, Moringa Seeds can boost our diet in a healthy way and top up on anything we are lacking.

Is Moringa Safe

Moringa Seeds are a natural  micronutrient, packed full of goodness and have been medically researched to be safe. Some claims on it though seem a bit stretched (for example, the fact that they are using moringa seeds for weight loss and claiming that they are a miracle fat busting remedy) but many kitchen cupboards and medicine drawers are being stocked with these seeds (or in oil form) and the benefits for health (including headaches, stomach issues, fluid retention and more) are extensive. This is why it is living up to its nickname as The Miracle Tree.
