The nostrils are lined with a wet, mucous membrane that filters the air and moisturizes the respiratory tract, in order to prevent your lungs and bronchial tubes from dryness. It also regulates the temperature inside the nostrils, keeping them warm and humid.

Sinuses are equipped with mucus producing cells that lubricate the nostrils to prevent them from drying. This natural mucus is made of water, proteins, antibodies and salts.

Why Does Your Nose Get Dry?

A dry nose symptom appears when mucus is reduced in your sinuses. Although it is not a serious condition, it is uncomfortable as it prevents you from breathing normally and it can lead to more severe health problems such as sinusitis, infections, headaches, respiratory problems.

Dryness of your nose occurs during certain exterior conditions, such as freezing in the winter, hot summer days, arid and dry climate. Sometimes, it can be a side-effect of certain medication.

You have many natural remedies for your dry nose right under your nose, probably right in your kitchen. Which are these?

  1. Coconut Oil For Dry Nose

    Coconut oil is one of the most simple, effective, and natural ingredients you can use for your dry nose. A plus would be that it smells delicious, but if you don’t like the smell, you can use a deodorized version of oil, it works just fine.

    What you need

    cold pressed coconut oil
    How to use it

    Fill a small bottle with dropper (5 ml or so) with coconut oil and pour 1-2 drops of oil in each nostril once or twice per day, or whenever you feel the need. You can carry it with you everywhere in your purse or in your car.
    You can also pour the oil drops on the tip of your finger (wash your hands before that) and then you can gently apply it all over your nostril walls.
    Don’t use cotton swabs inside your nose, as they might hurt you and they can also trigger sneezing, irritation, tingling.

  3. Although it’s a controversial remedy for dry nose, many still recommend it.
    Vaseline or Petroleum jelly is said to moisturize your dry nose by forming a sealant that keeps the water in the mucous membrane. Practically, the water is prevented to leave the tissue.
    How to use it
    Apply a small dab of petroleum jelly inside the nostrils, gently coating the inner walls.

    How to use it

    Add the salt in the bottle (with a small funnel made of paper) and then pour the water. Shake until salt is dissolved completely.
    Tilt the head and drip a few drops of saline water in each nostril or spray into the nose.

    • 1 teaspoon sea salt or Himalayan salt
    • 1 cup of warm water (not hot)

    How to use it

    It’s best to do it each morning, as a mean to clear up your nose and maintain the natural moisture. This method will keep your sinuses clean and nostrils humid the whole day.

    1. Dissolve the salt in the glass of water.
    2. Pour a little saline water in your left palm, then cover the right nostril with the thumb of the right hand and inhale the water as deep as you can, to reach into the sinus cavities.
    3. Now blow the water out from the nostril.
    4. Switch hands and pour saline water in the right palm, cover the left nostril with the left thumb and inhale the water as deep as you can into the sinuses.
    5. Blow the water out from the nostril.
    6. Alternate the left and right nostril about 5 times or until you feel that your nostrils are clean.

    Optional: you can use a Neti pot to help you with that.

  8. Steam Inhalation
  9. Warm steam clears your nose and sinuses, stimulates the natural mucus production in your nose, and keeps the necessary humidity in your nostrils.

    It relieves the discomfort and dryness in your nose.

    What you need

    • Hot water
    • Large bowl
    • Big cotton towel

    Optional:

    • You can add comforting essential oils, such as chamomile oil, eucalyptus oil, or cardamom oil
    • You can use an electric steamer vaporizer that you can purchase from an online or local beauty store

    How to use it:

    • Heat water and bring it to a boil.
    • Carefully pour it into a large bowl, on a table or chair, so that you can sit over it.
    • Leave it just as it is or you can add a few drops of essential oils to help lubricate, soothe, and moisturize your inner mucous membrane of your nostrils.
    • Bend your head over it, with steam blowing gently in your face.
    • Cover your head and the bowl with the towel. The steam has to go under the towel. Careful not to overdo it or burn your face.
    • Inhale the steam through your nose only. Keep your mouth closed. Breath in and out only through the nose. Do so for 10-20 minutes.

  11. Sesame oil stimulates the nasal membrane to maintain the healthy level of mucus and keeps the nostrils lubricated. Sesame oil is recommended particularly for dry skin conditions.

    What you need

    Cold pressed sesame oil
    How to use it

    Apply it just like the coconut oil.

    Optional: you may add essential oils such as chamomile oil (soothing, anti-inflammatory, calming, and lubricating), cardamom oil (stimulates and softens the mucous membrane).

    Small cotton towel

    Damp a towel in warm water (don’t make it too hot, to burn your skin, but as warm as you can take without problems, and not colder than your body temperature).

    Mix of dried emollient herbs

    Fill half a jar with dried herbs.

    Pour a cold-pressed oil of your choice over the herbs, to fill the jar. Make sure the herbs are covered with oil completely.

    Screw the lid on and leave it in the sun (by the window, for example) for 2-3 weeks, so that the herbs have time to infuse the oil with their properties.

    Strain the herbs and keep the herbal infused oil in a jar with lid, in a dark, dry, cold place for up to 1 years.

    How to use it

    Use it as any other oil. More than just an oil, this infused lubricant will have the emollient power of the herbs added.
